Heat-Shrink Boa Clamps: The First Hose Clamp Redesign Since the 1921 Jubilee Clip

The worm-drive hose clamp in most engine bays traces its shape to 1921, when Commander Lumley Robinson started turning out the Jubilee Clip in Gillingham, England. A stamped steel band with a small slotted screw housing looked like a clever fix at the time. A century later, that same screw housing still loosens after heat cycles, slices knuckles, and bites a groove into rubber hoses.
Jon Petty launched Hose Candy at the SEMA Show in November 2009 from OOMPH Labs LLC in St. George, Utah. The booth showed a different approach: Boa Clamps, heat-shrink clamps with no screw thread to back off. The brand picked up two SEMA Global Media Awards in 2011, one for Barb Bites and one for Hose Skins. More telling than the trophies is who kept using the parts.
Worm-drive clamps won on cost
Stamped steel and a threaded screw could be mass produced cheaply, and that is why the worm-drive clamp became the default. Spring clamps and T-bolt clamps have their jobs, but the generic replacement in most bays stayed the slotted band. Holding tension over repeated heat cycles was never its strength.
Every drive runs the same cycle. The coolant warms, the rubber hose expands, and the steel band resists. The screw housing stays put while the hose changes shape under it. After enough heating and cooling, the rubber compresses and the clamp loses grip. You retighten it. The hose wears a new groove, and the seepage returns around the radiator neck or heater fitting.
That slotted band has another habit. When a screwdriver slips off a rusty hex head, the band edge opens a cut along your finger. It has happened in driveways and service bays for decades.
Dynamic Tension removes the thread
Boa Clamps drop the screw entirely. The patent covers what Hose Candy calls Dynamic Tension Technology. You slide the clamp over the hose end, heat it with a heat gun, and the clamp shrinks to match the fitting and hose profile under it. As the engine cools, the clamp contracts and grips tighter. Nothing protrudes. No screw housing needs clearance for a driver or socket. On turbo cars with tight routing, plastic covers, and fan shrouds close to the hoses, that low profile saves both time and skin.
Builders kept the part
Ringbrothers, the muscle car builders Mike and Jim Ring, use and co-brand Hose Candy products on their builds. A show car builder cannot afford a clamp that loosens on the drive back to the trailer. Those cars run hot, sit in traffic, and race. The U.S. Military also lists Hose Candy among its suppliers for service and fleet work. Corrosion resistance and a no-retightening clamp matter when a vehicle has to come back from the field without a maintenance stop.
That track record traces to the product's behavior, not its looks. The clamp grips harder as the engine cools. It has no screw to walk out. It installs in about sixty seconds with a heat gun.
Install once and skip the retightening
The old pattern was tighten, drive, retighten, and still find a damp line at the hose end. Boa Clamps follow the same logic as the rest of the Hose Candy line.
