How to route a new radiator hose for a classic car?

Routing a radiator hose sounds like the easy part of a build. You buy a hose, push it onto two fittings, and tighten a clamp. A hose that clears the pulleys on a stand can touch the fan shroud once the motor mounts flex under load. Your lower hose can collapse without leaking a drop. The water pump pulls suction on that side at high rpm, and a straight rubber hose without internal support will flatten and starve the block before the gauge tells you anything is wrong. Treat routing as a sequence: measure, build, fit dry, trim, clamp, verify with the engine running.
Measure the actual run first
Measure the run before you order a hose. The old hose can mislead you if a previous owner routed it wrong, or if an aftermarket radiator and intake moved the fittings. Bend a length of 1/4-inch rod or stiff wire along the path the new hose will follow, in three dimensions rather than a flat side view, and note every point where the hose passes a pulley, a belt, a bracket, or the inner fender. Keep at least half an inch of clearance from anything that moves. With old motor mounts, run that check with the engine cold and again after a short heat cycle. The engine rocks farther on soft rubber than you expect.
Pick the hose for the duty
Classic car radiator hoses break into three groups:
- Stock molded hose: the smoothest internal path when the engine and radiator are original and the part number still exists.
- Universal flex hose: an internal wire stops collapse, but the corrugations add flow restriction and it looks unfinished.
- Straight hose with custom bends: build the shape you need, then support it internally.
A straight hose shaped to fit is where Hose Bones earn their place. The internal skeleton slides inside the hose, lets you form it in about 60 seconds to 2 minutes, and holds a molded look. If you get the bend wrong, re-form it. If you swap pulleys and pick up a new clearance issue, re-form it again. For coolant, performance silicone rated above 500°F and meeting SAE J20 is safe. Keep silicone away from fuel and emissions hoses, where that rating doesn't apply.
Fit it dry and trim
Fit every hose dry before you cut or clamp anything. Slide the hose onto both fittings without a clamp. For a molded hose, rotate it on the nipple until the bend relaxes into its natural position. Don't force a twist. If the hose only lines up when you hold it under twist, the cut is short or the hose is wrong. Trim in small passes with a sharp hose cutter or a fresh blade. Leave the hose a touch long, fit it, mark the final length, then trim again. Support the lower hose
The lower hose can collapse without leaking a drop. On that side, the water pump pulls coolant from the radiator, and at high rpm that creates negative pressure inside the hose. A molded lower hose has structure built into its bends. A straight rubber hose doesn't. When you build a lower hose from straight stock, center the internal support so it spans the flex zone between the two necks. Squeeze the hose with the engine off to test it. A supported hose resists your grip; a hollow one gives.
Clamp it, verify clearance, and recheck
Set each clamp fully on the neck, behind the flare at the end of the nipple. Too close to the lip and the band can cut the jacket; too far down the neck leaves the hose unsupported at the connection. Boa Clamps heat-shrink onto the joint and conform to the shape of the fitting. They don't need retightening after the first heat cycle. Old water necks pit for decades, and a worm gear clamp with flat spots will seep on that surface. After clamping, close the hood on a strip of tape placed on the high point of the hose. If the tape shows contact, reroute or trim before you drive. Fill the system with a spill-free funnel and run the engine until the thermostat opens, the level holds steady, the fans cycle, and there are no bubbles. Then stop and check for drips after three heat cycles.
Get the route right and the radiator hose stops being the rubber afterthought. It becomes part of the show. For a custom lower hose, form it with Hose Bones and finish with Boa Clamps.
